The title of this post really isn't true. However, it came close. Sort of. And by sort of I mean that there were two big wins which I don't think very many people expected. As you probably already know, the award for album of the year did not go to Eminem for his mediocre "Recovery" or to Lady Gaga for "The Fame Monster," but rather to a band known to us as Arcade Fire for their amazing album title "The Suburbs." Yep, that's right. Although it is going out on a limb to call Arcade Fire indie, considering that at one point their new album did take the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. These days that doesn't say much though, just look at who topped the charts less than a month ago. The Decemberists. The King is Dead was #1, so I guess that you can have a #1 album and still be considered indie, or at least not mainstream. Check out Arcade Fire's grammy performance of their song "Ready To Start," one of the best from the album below.
The other winner that came as a shock to me, actually more of a pleasant surprise was Danger Mouse who came out on top for best producer of the year for his production of 'Broken Bells' by Broken Bells and 'Brothers' by Black Keys. I guess I just expected Red One or The Smeezingtons to win, taking into account that they produced the biggest songs of the year such as "Poker Face" or "Billionaire." Luckily the grammy voters came to their senses and gave it to the producer of some good albums rather than mainstream crap. I applaud them, as well as Danger Mouse.
In relation to Danger Mouse, did anyone hear about his upcoming album 'Rome,' which includes collaboration with Jack White of the recently broke up White Stripes (R.I.P), and Norah Jones? To be released May 17 (according to Pitchfork), I must say I am pretty excited for this album (though the Italian inspiration coming from Danger Mouse does seem very interesting).
Here is the track list:
Rome:
01 Theme of Rome
02 The Rose with the Broken Neck
03 Morning Fog (Interlude)
04 Season's Trees
05 Her Hollow Ways (Interlude)
06 Roman Blue
07 Two Against One
08 The Gambling Priest
09 The World (Interlude)
10 Black
11 The Matador Has Fallen
12 Morning Fog
13 Problem Queen
14 Her Hollow Ways
15 The World
I dont exactly know what I expected you to get from that, but there it is.
So there you go, my little Grammy round up, that really wasn't much of a round up at all. Happy Valentine's Day! I'm out.
